Dante: inferno canto XXVIII ventottesimo

vedi come storpiato è Maometto!
Dinanzi a me sen va piangendo Alì,
fesso nel volto dal mento al ciuffetto।
Western literature and art have portrayed Mohammed in Hell;
with his four wifes tearing him apart to get him to preform his marital duties, like the crusified profeet with no feet to walk elsewhere.
... in Hell, following the example of Dante Aligheiri (1265 - 1321) and his book "The Divine Comedy." In the section entitled "Inferno" (Canto 28), Dante wrote:
"A cask by losing center-piece or cant
Was never shattered so, as I saw one
Rent from the chin to where one breaketh wind.
Between his legs were hanging down his entrails;
His heart was visible, and the dismal sack
That maketh excrement of what is eaten. che merda fa di quel che si trangugia
While I was all absorbed in seeing him,
He looked at me, and opened with his hands
His bosom, saying: "See now how I rend me;
How mutilated, see, is Mahomet; vedi come storpiato e Maometto
In front of me doth Ali weeping go, Dinazi a me sen va piagendo Ali,
Cleft in the face from forelock unto chin; fesso nel volto dal mento al ciuffetto
And all the others whom thou here beholdest,
Disseminators of scandal and of schism
While living were, and therefore are cleft thus."
This image of a disemboweled Mohammed inspired 19th Century artist Gustav Doré to produce an illustration for Dante's work that still has a power to shock. It can be seen here. Artist and mystic William Blake depicted the same scene in a watercolor entitled "The Schismatics and Sowers of Discord: Mahomet." Since 1920, this painting has been housed in the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia.
Salvador Dali depicted Mohammed in Hell in a bizarre illustration for Dante's masterwork, which was distributed in

Voltaire did not write his tragedy _Mahomet ou le fanatisme_ as a historical study; he was aware that his fiction was in many respects at variance with history. In writing his work he was, as he himself expresses it, inspired by
He wanted to put before the public an armed Tartufe and thought he might lay the part upon Mohammed, for, says he, "is not the man, who makes war against his own country and dares to do it in the name of God, capable of any ill?" The dislike that Voltaire had conceived for the Qorân from a superficial acquaintance with it,"ce livre inintelligible qui fait frémir le sens commun à chaque page,"
probably increased his unfavourable opinion, but the principal motive of his choice of a representative must have been that the general public still regarded Mohammed as the incarnation of fanaticism and priestcraft.Sorce: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/10163/10163-8.txt

One might describe Europe’s civil condition as a low-intensity civil war. Outright violence is limited to the sort of rioting by Muslim youth gangs that erupted in France in October 2006, and on a smaller scale in Denmark during the past week. But the threat of violence, including widespread intimidation of public figures, is continuous. Wilders lives under constant police protection. The courageous Ayaan Hirsi Ali, co-maker of the film that cost Theo van Gogh his life in 2004 and the author of a bestselling tract against Islam, remains in constant danger of assassination. Her predicament sets in relief the moral bankruptcy of Europe’s governments.
Not since lions tore apart slaves for the prurient enjoyment of the Roman mob has Europe witnessed a spectacle as revolting as Hirsi Ali’s appearance last week before the European Parliament. She has lived under guard since Theo van Gogh’s murder in 2004. To its shame, the Dutch government has stopped paying for her security. On February 14 she asked the European Parliament to fund her security, saying: "The threats to my life have not subsided and the cost is beyond anything I can pay ... I find myself in a very desperate position. I don't want to die. I want to live and I love life. I'm going to do anything legal to get help."
Before the eyes of the world, a leading citizen of the Netherlands begs the legislature of Europe to protect her against assassins whose declared goal is the destruction of Europe’s liberties as well as its civilization. The Dutch government turns its back. Europe’s Parliament listens politely and refers the matter to committee. A group of French members of parliament has invited her to apply for French citizenship so that the French government might offer her protection.
Thus far, the authorities of Europe have made clear that they will do nothing to prevent the murder of a prominent citizen. If Ayaan Hirsi Ali, whose plea to the European Parliament made headlines, can expect no help from the authorities when her life is at imminent risk, what succor can the anonymous victims of Islamist violence expect?
I am ashamed to say that it did not become clear to me that Wilders has taken the only appropriate course of action until I read carefully the Archbishop of Canterbury’s now-infamous "sharia" speech. Stripped of casuistry, he proposed that Muslim women subject to forced marriages, genital mutilation, or domestic violence should be handed over to Muslim religious courts, rather than be offered the protection of English Common Law. To my knowledge, this is the first time that one of Europe’s spiritual leaders has proposed to abandon innocent victims to their fate.
Archbishop Dr Rowan Williams, to be sure, has a point. But he should have stated plainly what he really thinks. What he wanted to say is more or less: "To protect a few hundred or a few thousand colored ladies, the English state will have to put its big boots on, kick down the doors of Muslim homes, trample through Muslim living rooms, tear up the fabric of Muslim communities, and disrupt the social order. Why not turn such cases over to religious courts and wash our hands of them?" I reiterate: this is satanic hypocrisy.
If decent and well-meaning men like Dr Williams are so afraid of communal violence as to abandon the founding principles of common law and Judeo-Christian ethics, it is long past time to debate the fine points. Blessed are the pre-emptors, for they will get on with it.

Voltaire: la Pucelle d'Orléans
In 1750, Voltaire went to Potsdam to serve Frederick the Great as a court poet and philosopher. He spent three years there, writing and antagonizing the king, and again left on poor terms.
By this time, Voltaire was extremely rich, through speculation and bought a chateau in Geneva.
It was at the chateau he named “Les Delices” that he wrote the work he is most famous for, Candide. The local government did not like his presence, so in 1759 he purchased a huge estate close to the French border called Ferney.
Voltaire could now afford to write and concentrate on his passion, attacking Christianity. He considered Christianity to be very detrimental, and wrote many treatises, books, poems, and plays to that effect. He also wrote what many consider to be his best work Philosophical Dictionary. This work, like many of his others, was publicly burned and banned in many areas.
Voltaire returned briefly to Paris in 1778, but due to the trip he died at the age of 84 on May 30.

écrivains publice par Leeuwarder Courant;
21 Schrijvers op bres voor Ayaan Hirsi Ali;
It Nederlânske kabinet hat besletten om
Wy fine it beslút yn it foarste plak ûnakseptabel omdat it kabinet in Nederlânske steatsboarger, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, op dizze wize ûnnedich grut gefaar rinne lit. Ayaan Hirsi Ali is in frou mei in miening. Dêr kin men it mei iens wêze of net; dat is de frijheid dy’t elkenien hat.
Mar wy fine it beslút ek ûnakseptabel omdat it gefal Ayaan Hirsi Ali op sa’n eksimplaryske wize it rjocht op frije mieningsutering fertsjintwurdiget, ien fan de kearnwearden fan in frije, demokratyske maatskippij. De oerheid fan in frije demokrasy hat de plicht om noed te stean fan de ferkundigers en ferdigeners fan it frije wurd: keunstners, opinymakkers; elkenien dy’t him yn de iepenbierens uteret. As it Nederlânske kabinet de befeiliging fan Hirsi Ali net mear bekostigje wol, jout it in ferkeard sinjaal ôf en ûndergraaft it de demokrasy.

Free Ayaan fanboy 's art-poster
Touch not the cat bot a glove between the devil and the deep blue sea ; the Dutch gov't says it is willing to pay for Mme Ayaan Hirsi Ali's protection while she is in the NL, not abroad and the US says it does not pay security protection for individuals.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali told the European parliament in Brussels "The threats to my life have not subsided. If anything they have only increased. And the cost is beyond anything a private person can pay or raise ... I come here to ask you ... to establish a European fund to finance the protection of people like me, whose only crime is free speech."

From Reuters;
The Dutch government stopped paying the 2 million euros ($2.9 million) a year bill for protecting Somali-born Hirsi Ali, a former Dutch parliamentarian, in October after she left to join a U.S. think-tank in 2006.
"There is an initiative by French lawmakers of the Socialist Party and intellectuals put to the French government to make her French and let the French government take care of her protection," said Ingrid Pouw, Hirsi Ali's spokeswoman.
Hirsi Ali is now paying for her own protection from donations, said Pouw.
"She is collecting money on a monthly basis," she said.
French lawmakers have also tabled a motion to the European Parliament to get the bloc to pay for her protection, citing freedom of expression and the values of democracy, she said.
"It will be a solution to her problem," said Pouw. She said Hirsi Ali would be willing to take up French citizenship if it would help her get French funding for her protection.
